Art Bombing for Mental Health in Macedon Ranges Shire

The Art Bomb Project showcased the work of four artists from Romsey, Gisborne and Kyneton who all have experienced challenges with their mental health and find art a useful strategy for dealing with the ups and downs of trauma and recovery.

Project artists – Aimee Timpson, Fiona Farrugia, Lachlan McKenzie and Mark Ingall – have very different styles, but they share a common bond. All have experienced mental health challenges, and find art a useful strategy for dealing with the ups and downs of trauma and recovery.

If you or someone you know needs help with their mental health, see resources here

To say I became absorbed and obsessed with this project is an understatement. It crept into my dreams and moved my mental state. I was overtaken and driven by this small moving artwork. Only now coming up to breathe.

The Audacity of Hope, is addressing my own mental health journey, and how I do have the audacity to hope.

I moved the artwork from the darkness to show you that there is an audacity to hope. It jumps, wiggles, moves and smooths in the same way I move. There is some raw honesty that, without a project like this, may have been left unsaid and not allowed me to heal.

I have The Audacity of Hope.

Fiona Farrugia

Name: Stay While I Swing

Medium: Acrylic paint on canvas 200cm X90cm

Location: The Corner Coffee Bar, Corner Hamilton/Bramtone Street, Gisborne, 3437

Reserve Price: $900

This painting is inspired by the concept of staying with yourself through challenging times. Surrounding yourself in nature and finding messages in your environment, which support you.

Mark Ingall

Name: The Key

Medium: Paint on aluminum sheets

Location: Holgate Brewhouse, external wall, corner of High Street and Anslow Street, Woodend, 3442.

Reserve Price: $1500

Although the key is only a minor depiction within the scale of the mural, it is the most crucial. The key represents a tool of freedom, to unlock and most importantly to let people in. While a world of colour is all around us, it is still too easy to be pulled down by the weight of our own thoughts.

I hope this piece not only brings awareness to the importance of self-care, but also visual happiness and encourages other people to open up about their mental health.

Lachlan McKenzie

Name: A Path Upward

Medium: Oil on canvas 100x150cm

Location: Romsey Hub, 96 Main Street, Romsey 3434

Reserve Price: $3000

This piece was led by forward momentum. By refusing to be stagnant and sinking low. It acknowledges the presence of a path forward, a long path that hasn't ended, will not end tomorrow and tucks away beyond the hills into the unexpected.

I wished to represent both the dark and light in one image - broken apart by a road leading onward, diverging and full of the opportunity life beyond the very present moment holds.
